Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet;

And on my leaning shoulder she placed her snow-white hand. She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs; But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.

Down by the Salley Gardens (Irish: Gort na Saileán) is a poem by William Butler Yeats published in The Wanderings of Oisin and Other Poems in 1889. For his great achievement in establishing the Irish and British literature，he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1923 as the first Irishman so honored for what the Nobel Committee described as "inspired poetry, which in a highly artistic form gives expression to the spirit of a whole nation."

Yeats revealed in a note that this poem was "an attempt to

reconstruct an old song from three lines imperfectly remembered by an old peasant woman in the village of Ballisodare, Sligo, who often sings them to herself." The "old song" may have been the ballad "The Rambling Boys of Pleasure." The lyrics to The Rambling Boys of Pleasure contain the

following verse:

"It was down by Sally's Garden one evening late I took my way. 'I was there I spied this pretty little girl, and those words to me sure she did say.

She advised me to take love easy, as the leaves grew on the tree.

But I was young and foolish, with my darling could not agree."

Actually I knew the poem when one day I happened to hear an Irish folk song sung by Emi Fujita. (not sure whether its melody is similar to that of the old Irish song)Her voice is very calm and pure accompanied by the fascinating melody. Once heard, its beautiful lyrics caught my attention. Although they are just simple words, they successfully picture the beauty of young love. That was why I kept searching its information and surprisingly found it was a poem by the famous Irish poet W.B. Yeats.

Yeats created the rest part of the old song following to the same ending rhyme /i:/, which is a very common skill of writing poetry. I realize that the /i:/ sound is more welcomed than some other sounds especially when it is sung with music, because the /i:/ sound itself is like humming. Perhaps it was what the poet had noticed.

The poem’s tone is melancholy, which is about reminiscence and sentiment of one’s young love. The first lines” Down by the salley gardens my love and I did meet”, gives the picture of a romantic encounter. “Salley” is a Standard English for “sallow” but means “willow” in Irish. I have the speculation that both the scene of the salley gardens and the description of the lover’s snow-white feet and hands are evident signals of the hopeful and thriving youth. Besides, I can easily form a colorful picture in my mind when I read the lines. Despite few color word is used between lines except “snow-white”, there are plenty color image hinted in words such as “salley garden” “leaves” “trees” “grass” to combine a spring day of warm air and sweetness.

“She bid me take love easy, as the leaves grow on the tree; She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs;” These four lines mark the climax of the poem as well as of the song. I try to seek some proper words to explain the veiled meanings. Perhaps the poet is comparing the natural way of love to leaves’ growth on trees, but what is a natural way of love and a natural way of life? Nature has its law to go, so does the life of human beings, so no need to be hasty and waste time to pursue the superficial decoration. The true happiness lies in a peaceful soul. This is my understanding of natural way of love and life.

“But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears.” The final line drags the picture to a weathered man recalling his youth and lover. There are tears of regret and sentiment of the irrevocable past elapsing like running water. Having failed to grips the true meaning of love and life, he may had been blinded by the world of perplexity and lost the girl teaching him how to live an easy life. Feelings of infinite melancholy stole over him.

In the poem the girl being admired is descried almost like a goddess. She is beautiful and peaceful and above all, she is full of wisdom of life. Is there another veiled symbol of the girl? Like some more mysterious meaning, after all, Yeats was a Symbolist poet who once said “The mystical life is the centre of all that I do and all that I think and all that I write.”
