篇二:英语作文题材

Topic: Science, Technology and Medicine

a. Glossary of terms A cell that can continuously produce unaltered daughters and also has the ability to produce daughter cells that have different, more restricted properties. the creation of new life by other than the natural means available to an organism. Examples include artificial insemination, in vitro fertilisation, cloning and embryonic splitting, or cleavage. The process of freezing and storing the body of a diseased, recently deceased

person to prevent tissue decomposition so that at some future time the person might be brought back to life upon development of new medical cures the process of creating an identical copy of something. In biology, it collectively refers to processes used to create copies of DNA fragments (molecular cloning), cells (cell cloning), or organisms. The term also encompasses situations whereby organisms reproduce asexually The ability of a computer or other machine to perform actions thought to require intelligence

a negative term for the appropriation, generally by means of patents, of legal rights over indigenous biomedical knowledge without compensation to the indigenous groups who originally developed such knowledge the use of non-human animals in scientific experimentation an oath traditionally taken by physicians pertaining to the ethical practice of medicine

Passive euthanasia is a form of euthanasia in which medical treatment that will keep a dying patient alive for a time is withdrawn. Active euthanasia is a the ending of life by the deliberate administration of drugs Euthanasia is carried out at the request of the person who dies an approach to health care that is concerned primarily with attending to physical and emotional comfort rather than effecting a cure. a method of late-term (after 20 weeks) abortion that terminates a pregnancy and results in the death and intact removal of a fetus. This procedure is most commonly referred to as intact dilatation and extraction (D & X). It occurs in a rare percentage of pregnancies. A pursuit of knowledge purely through experience, especially by means of observation and sometimes by experimentation

b. Key factual information

Science: knowledge attained through study or practice. It refers to a system of acquiring knowledge. This system uses observation and experimentation to describe and explain natural phenomena. The term science also refers to the organized body of knowledge people have gained using that system.

The scientific method: it is a process for experimentation that is used to explore observations and answer questions. Scientists use the scientific method to search for cause and effect relationships in nature. In other words, they design an experiment so that changes to one item cause something else to vary in a

predictable way. Usually, a hypothesis will be proposed. By doing experiments to verify the accuracy of the experiments, scientists will analyze the data and draw a conclusion or check again.

Goal of science: While science aims to answer questions pertaining to physical reality, it cannot be the goal of science to answer all the questions, especially those that are not provable by the scientific methods. It provides conclusions regarding our observations of nature, rather than conclusions about nature itself; it seeks to verify hypothesis, not to provide absolute and unquestionable truth.

Value of science: The scientists and students would not only directly gain scientific knowledge of the world in his field of study, but also acquire skills of systematic ,logical and analytical thought through utilizing the scientific methods. Society at large might gain from the practical benefits brought by the new technologies created by the application of science.

Technology: it is a broad concept that deals with an animal species' usage and knowledge of tools and crafts, and how it affects an animal species. Currently, it refers to the branch of knowledge that deals with the creation and use of technical means and their interrelation with life, society, and the environment, drawing upon such subjects as industrial arts, engineering, applied science, and pure science. Indeed, technology has brought advantages and comforts. It makes life easier and more efficient in modern life. It also brings harms like pollution, destruction, natural resources depletion and communication problems in social life. Technology depends on its use to determine it is advantageous or otherwise.

Medicine is the art and science of healing. It encompasses a range of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness.

Currently, advances in bioengineering, computing power, materials technology and many other areas of science have led to the development of many medical devices. During heart surgery, an artificial heart and lung machine keep the patient alive. Kidney damage can quickly kill but renal dialysis can keep patients alive even though their kidneys have failed. Hearing aids and cochlea implants bring sound to the hard of hearing. Biotechnology is allowing pure drugs, such as human insulin, to be produced in large quantities. Even though medicine has benefited many people, it generates much ethical problems regarding life. For example, the issue of euthanasia and abortion are quite contentious. Besides, the contemporary roles of medical

practitioners may also need to be redefined.

Discussions about the three topics are not purely constrained within their definitional boundaries. Often, there are broader issues which are necessarily appended to them, e.g. environment, ethics, morality, religion, communication etc.

c. debates and controversies

Different opinions:

Science is a benefactor of mankind. There are several views on science. Views become dire when the type of science at hand mingles with religion. Some are of the opinion that science and religion come into conflict with each other. Yet,

others believe that science and religion do not come into conflict with each other as both have different goals. One such science is genetic engineering. The study and practice of genetic engineering is a step up for some. It can be a step into blasphemy for others.

Scientists are primarily concerned with acquiring knowledge concerning natural phenomena. Yet, controversy arises regarding whether scientists are responsible for how the new knowledge, in the form of the theories tested, may be used by others for possibly harmful ends.

Because of the extensive value of science, many believe that science should rightly receive public funding.

Some think that certain types of environmental problems initially caused by the deleterious effects of technology may eventually be resolved by the application of environmental technology.

The growing socio-economic divide engendered by information technology or the Internet may not be simplistically resolved by further developments for this arena of technology. Cyber pessimists typically point to the continuing existence of digital divide in different countries to buttress their argument that the Internet is simply reinforcing rampant social and economic inequality.

Those who believe that recent practices of doctors and scientists amount to

“playing God” believe that scientists and doctors are violating the sanctity of life by making decisions and providing advice regarding issues of life and death (e.g. abortion, artificial life support, artificial fertilization technology)

Science

1. Stem cell research:

There exists a widespread controversy over stem cell research that emanates from the techniques used in the creation and usage of stem cells. Human embryonic stem cell research is particularly controversial because, with the present state of technology, starting a stem cell line requires the destruction of a human embryo and/or therapeutic cloning. However, recently, it has been shown in principle that embryonic stem cell lines can be generated using a single-cell biopsy similar to that used in pre-implantation genetic diagnosis that may allow stem cell creation without embryonic destruction.

Opponents of the research argue that embryonic stem cell technologies are a slippery slope to reproductive cloning and can fundamentally devalue human life. Those in the pro-life movement argue that a human embryo is a human life and is therefore entitled to protection.

Contrarily, supporters of embryonic stem cell research argue that such research should be pursued because the resultant treatments could have significant medical potential. It is also noted that excess embryos created for in vitro fertilisation could be donated with consent and used for the research.

2. Genetic engineering

Genetic engineering is the direct manipulation of the genetic contents (the DNA) of cells, referred top as genetic modification or GM. Hopefully this is being done with

We can't live happily without television. First, it can give us the latest information and news. It can also open up our eyes and give us more and more knowledge. Second, we can spend our free time watching our favorite TV shows. What's more, after a whole day's hard work or study we can sit before the television and drink a cup of tea to relax ourselves. How wonderful it is! But, television is bad for our health. It's bad for us to watch TV too long, especially bad for our eyes.
