　　Many people simply regard Pride and Prejudice as a love story, but in my opinion, this book is an illustration of the society at that time. She perfectly reflected the relation between money and marriage at her time and gave the people in her works vivid characters.

　　The characters have their own personalities. Mrs. Bennet is a woman who makes great efforts to marry off her daughters. Mr. Bingley is a friendly young man, but his friend, Mr. Darcy, is a very proud man who seems to always feel superior. Even the five daughters in Bennet family are very different. Jane is simple, innocent and never speaks evil of others. Elizabeth is a clever girl who always has her own opinion. Mary likes reading classic books. （Actually she is a pedant.） Kitty doesn’t have her own opinion but likes to follow her sister, Lydia. Lydia is a girl who follows exotic things, handsome man, and is somehow a little profligate. When I read the book, I can always find the same personalities in the society now. That is why I think this book is indeed the representative of the society in Britain in the 18th century.

　　The family of gentleman in the countryside is Jane Austen’s favourite topic. But this little topic can reflect big problems. It concludes the stratum situation and economic relationships in Britain in her century. You can find these from the very beginning of this book.

　　The first sentence in this book is impressive. It reads: “It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must be in need of a wife”。 The undertone is very clear: the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession.

　　People always think that Austen was an expert at telling love stories. In fact, the marriage in her book is not the result of love, but the result of economic needs. After reading this book, I know the truth is that a poor woman must be in need of a husband, a wealthy man.

　　I couldn’t forget how eager Mrs. Bennet wants to marry off her daughters. If you want to know why she is so crazy about these things, I must mention the situation in Britain at that time. Only the eldest son had the privilege of inheriting his father’s possessions. Younger sons and daughters who are used to luxurious lives have no choice but marry a man or woman in possession of a large fortune to continue their comfortable lives. Thus, we can see that getting married is a way to become wealthier, particularly for women without many possessions. Jane Austen told us that money and possession determined everything, including marriage and love in her century.

　　In “Pride and Prejudice”， the sister of Mr. Bingley strongly opposed his plan of marrying Jane because the Bennets don’t have many possessions and their social positions are much lower than them. From this, we can see there are a lot of obstacles for a not very rich woman to marry a wealthy husband. The society, the relatives would not allow them to get married.

　　In modern society, although the marriages of economic needs have decreased rapidly, the concept of “money determines everything” is still rooted in some people’s mind. A lot of parents try hard to interfere their children’s marriages. Education background, possessions, jobs remains the main reason that may influence one’s marriage. Marry for money is still a big problem in our society. We can’t help thinking: can money determine everything?

　　Austen left this problem for us to think. The genius of Jane Austen lies in this perfect simplicity, the simplicity that reflects big problems. Although Austen was only 21 when she wrote “Pride and Prejudice”， her sharp observation of social lives makes the style of this book surprisingly mature and lively. The plots in her works are always very natural. The development of the plot is as inevitable as a problem in mathematics. I think the depth of Pride and Prejudice is the reason that makes this book prominent and classic. Today, her book still can be the guide telling us the economic relationships both at her time and in modern time.

A Book Report on

Jane Austen was born into a Middle-class family in 1775. She was the seventh child of Rev.George Austen, rector of Steventon. With her sisters she was educated at home, and passed her life very quietly, cheerfully, in the doing of small domestic duties. She began to write at an early age. Walter Scott was her admirer until her early death;

but these two, the greatest writers of fiction in their age ,were never brought together. Jane Austen never married on the whole life. She died, quietly as she had lived, at Winchester, in 1817,and was buried in the cathedral.She was a bright, attractive little women, whose sunny qualities are unconsciously reflected in all her books. Jane Austen completed six novels, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma. Each is perfect, and there is no choosing between them for one who enjoys her quiet irony and her simple delicate analysis of character. She was the founder of the novel which deals with unimportant middle-class people and of which there are many fine examples in later English fiction. Her style is easy and effortless, a perfect example of what De Quincey meant when he said that we should have to turn to the prose of the cultivated gentlewoman for English uncorrupted by the slang and cant of the world.

The main idea of chapter one and two of Pride and Prejudice is as follows. It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of good fortune must be in want of a wife. At such a situation, a kind of people like Mrs.Bennet appeared. The chief business of Mrs.Bennet’s life was to find suitable husbands for her five daughters. When a single gentleman with a large fortune by the name of Bingley moves into a mansion called Netherfield Park, the news quickly spreads through the neighborhood via gossipy women. In order that one of their daughters can marry such a rich young man, Mrs.Bennet begs her husband to visit Mr.Bingley. While Mr.Bennet was so odd a person,sarcastic humor, reserve ,and caprice, that Mrs.Bennet so speechless and complaining. In

fact, Mr.Bennet is the first one of that area to visit Mr.Bingley without telling Mrs.Bennet. Finally, Mrs.Bennet and her daughters know that. The following thing that girls are going to do is preparing for the ball with Mr.Bingley.

Just from the two chapter, I can conclude that Mrs.Bennet is frivolous, excitable, and narrow-minded, and she imagines herself susceptible to attacks of tremors and palpitations. Though all what she had done just for her daughters, including instigating her daughters to marry rich men, I really do not like her way. Instead, I have a good impression on Mr.Bennet. He has a sarcastic, cynical sense of humour that he purposefully uses to irritate his wife. He loves his daughters (Elizabeth in particular), too.But he does not do as his wife. Comparatively, he is much more reason. From this we can see, marriage at that time of England just like a deal. They pay much attention to a man’s possession but his quality.

The impression of Pride and Prejudice

The book《 Pride and Prejudice》 is written by Jane Austen , a famous English writer .

I still remember the first sentence in this

book .It reads :"It is a truth well known to all the world that an unmarried man in possession of a large fortune must in need of a wife ."

The undertone is very clear : the foundation of the marriage at that time is not emotion but possession. Love seems to be a perpetual theme all the time .And the main story in the book Pride and Prejudice is not a exception .The writer tells us her views and attitudes about love and marriage in this book.

The novel mainly tells us a love story between Elizabath and Mr. Darcy.It is at a ball that Elizabeth meets Mr. Darcy for the first time and his pride and supercilious behaviors has left Elizabeth a terrible impression . This is the reason why Elizabeth's prejudice towards him begins .Besides this

reason ,there are two other incidents strengthens Elizabeth's prejudice .The first is that Wickham

speaks ill of Mr. Darcy, which makes Elizabeth thinks him is unworthy to making acquaince of.The second is that Elizabeth regards Darcy is the person who

separates her sister Jane and Mr. Bingley.But with the plots developing ,Darcy has changed himself and become no longer pride ,he also helps Jane and Bingley's reunion .All these factor change

Elizabeth's attitude towards Darcy. Eventually , Elizabeth and Darcy become a couple and lead a happy life from then on.

After reading this novel, I realize the

author—Jane Austen’s attitudes and views towards love and marriage: is unpractical to get married just for property, wealth and social status while would it be without caring about these elements. Marriage should be based on a real love and it is not a game! You can not just enjoy it without prudent

considerations. There is a gap which is called pride and prejudice between Elizabeth and Darcy , for they possess different society status and amount of property. But the ending which the author arranges that Elizabeth and Darcy break all the obstacles and

become a love couple suggests that true do exist no matter how different the background ,the status is .And I think this book will arouse people’s awareness of the importance of true love in a marriage.

看完《傲慢与偏见》有种意犹未尽的感觉，书中的人物似乎活在我的心里，又似乎都走出来出现在我身边，而他们身上的缺点也逐一在周围人中体现出来。随着书的结尾，书中人物都有个自的结局，但又似乎充满着变数，不管怎么样，对我来说喜欢的依然喜欢，厌恶的依然厌恶。

整本书的故事从班纳特一家说起，最终又以他们一家的生活概况为结局，中间描述了青年男女之间的情感纠葛，并以周围人的言论、态度从侧面折射出了当时的社会形态——即人与人之间无时无刻都存在的偏见，以及官宦世家居上位的傲慢。故事的结局可以说是美好的，但是中间的过程却显得极为坎坷，纵观全文几乎每个人都对其他人有着偏见，而正是因为这一点，使得故事一波三折。

猜疑的人不会有任何损失，而被猜疑的人却要蒙受不白之冤，更不能理解为何自己会受到不平待遇。达西的设定似乎就是这样一个角色，因为从小养成的性格是人感到傲慢，于是一传十十传百，众人纷纷人云亦云，恨不能把他贬低的更多些。却没有一个人愿意去了解这些传言真实性，放下自己的偏见。就连一向嫉恶如仇敢作敢当的伊丽莎白也因达西没邀请她共舞而对达西产生厌恶，并对于流言深以为然。在相当长的一段时间里，伊丽莎白怀着偏见与达西交流。怀着一颗恶意的心与人交流，自然难以取得什么好的结果。同样的，因为达西对吉英的偏见，使他帮助彬格莱做出错误的决定，以致在长达一年的时间里，吉英与彬格莱的爱情处于几近夭折的状态。就我个人而言，我一向认为自己还算是个公道的人，看到书中的有些描写不禁觉得有些夸张，但那当我看完全书再细想时发现，自己不止一次的对达西产生了猜忌和厌恶，可当发现自己的错误时，也只是对达西的误解稍有惋惜，并未有何自责。

偏见产生于自己的主观，或是亲近之人的态度。有些人，很容易对人或事产生偏见，因为自己的主观，更明确地说是因为唯心主义。这些人很愿意以自己的想法为基础去评价事物，并不吝以恶意去揣度。正如书中的彬格莱小姐，从来都是以恶意去看待伊丽莎白甚至吉英。归根结底，还是不愿去躬亲查明事物的原因，亦不在乎这种偏见会有何种结果——与自己无关自然好，与自己有利益那就更好了。而另一种人，则往往因为身边亲近之人的言论或态度，使得自己不自觉间便被偏见蒙蔽了眼。就如彬格莱先生，过度相信达西的意见，对于自己的爱情产生怀疑，几乎错失姻缘。伊丽莎白也是一样，因为自己更亲近韦翰，故而更愿意相信韦翰，对于达西的成见愈加深刻。

书中时时刻刻都体现出这些人的情绪，并逐步的激化矛盾，让读者迫不得已的选择站位继而恍然大悟般的意识到，自己竟然也被染上了偏见的情绪。不过究竟是书让人染上这些情绪，还是情绪本身就存在，只是书让你更真实的表现出来，就只能见仁见智了。

Prejudice is the worst evil of man – my thoughts on "Pride and Prejudice"

After reading "Pride and Prejudice ", I have a kind of boundless feeling. The characters in the book seem to live in my heart, and they all seem to come out to be by my side. Moreover, shortcomings of them one by one were reflected by people around me. With the end of the book, the characters in the book each have a different ending, which also seems full of variables;

however, I still like what attract me and dislike those disgust me.

The whole book begins with the story of the Bennets and also ends with the family life of the Bennets, and in the middle the whole book describes the emotional entanglements between the young men and women. Besides, the remarks and the attitudes of the people around the Bennets, also from one side reflects the social form of that time - the prejudice that exists at all times between people, and the arrogance of the upper stratum. The end of the story is really satisfactory, but the process is extremely bumpy. Throughout the text, almost everyone has a bias to others precisely because of which, the story twists and turn.

For people who have suspicions, there will not be any loss whereas those who were suspected have to live in the shadows and can not understand why they get uneven treatment. Darcy seems to be such a role because the character from childhood is brought up to feel arrogant that lots of people are parroting, wishing they could have put more demeaning on him. But no one is willing to put aside their own prejudices and understand the authenticity of these rumors. Even Elizabeth who detests unfair things, becomes to hate Darcy and thinks the rumor is naturally true just because Darcy doesn’t invite her to dance. For a long period of time, Elizabeth with prejudice communicates with Darcy. At the same time, because of prejudice, Darcy helps Bingley make the wrong decision to not marry Jane’s elder sister, resulting in the love of Jane and Bingley almost died. Naturally, nothing good result comes between Darcy and Elizabeth but mutual disgust and more prejudices.

As far as I am concerned, I always think that I am a reasonable person, but seeing some descriptions of the book I can not help but feel some exaggeration. However when I finish the whole book I find that I, more than once, produced suspicion and disgust to Darcy. Things become different when I find out that Darcy was misunderstood and I feel regret for my own prejudice. Prejudice comes from people’s subjections, or is close to the attitudes of people. Some people are ready to have a prejudice against people or things because of their own subjection, or more specifically, because of idealism. These people are willing to evaluate things with their own idea to be the foundation. For example, Miss Bingley never fails to be malicious to Elizabeth, even Jean. In the final analysis, she just doesn't want to find the truth with her own eyes, or she doesn't care about what kind of result this prejudice will have –if it has nothing to do with herself, it’s surely good, and if it can bring her interests, it’s much better. And the other kind of man is too stupid to believe people’s speech or attitude as Mr. Bingley, excessively believing Darcy's opinion. For his own suspicions, he almost missed his true love. Elizabeth is the same, she is more willing to be with Wickham, and becomes more and more hateful to Darcy.

The book embodies the person's moods all the time and gradually produces acute contradictions, making readers have to chose a position and then take a tumble of consciousness to the fact that he should also be infected with prejudice emotions. But whether the book makes a person infected with these emotions, or emotional itself exists and only books make your more true expression comes out, brings various opinions of different readers.

Afterthought of 《Pride and Prejudice》

Recently I read a book called 《Pride and Prejudice》,which was written by Jane Austen, a British woman writer.

This book was very wonderful. It mainly told two young people who had pride and prejudice with each other finally got married and became a couple. The main characters were Darcy and Elizabeth. At a dancing party, Bingley fallen into love in the first sight when he saw Elizabeth’s elder sister, Jane. Jane’s mother, Mrs.Bennetwas very thrilled because of this. Bingley’s best friend, Darcy, also took part in this dancing party. He was handsome and wealthy. Many young girls liked him. However, Darcy was very proud. He did not think that they were able to be his dancing partner, including Elizabeth. Elizabeth had a very strong sense of dignity. She decided not to pay attention thisproud man.

Wickham, a handsome young military officer in the near tower, won the good praise from others. Elizabeth was also infatuated with him. One day, Wickham told her that his father had been Darcy’s father’s chamberlain. Darcy’s father had given him a legacy. But then it was snatched by Darcy. This strengthened the prejudice from Elizabeth to Darcy.

Then, one day, Elizabeth went a visit to Mrs. Catherine’s home. She saw Darcy, who was ready to celebrate the Easter Day in his aunt Mrs. Catherine’s home. Darcy couldn’t stop the feeling of love for Elizabeth. So he made an offer of marriage. But, he was still arrogant. With the heavy prejudice for him,

Elizabeth refused his offer firmly.

Darcy was hit hard. He firstly realized the bad result of his pride. He wrote a letter to Elizabeth and then left roughly. The letter was generally meant as followed: he admitted that he urged Bingley’s french leave because her mother was frivolous and vulgar and Jane did not liked Bingley as much as he did;

What Wickham said were all lies. In fact, Wickham himself ran out of the money and tried to accost Darcy’s sister.

Elizabeth was regretful wronging him and was ashamed of her mother’s behavior. She gradually changed the thought of Darcy.

The following year, Elizabeth came to Darcy’s farmstead with her uncle and aunt. She found that Darcy had changed. He became refined and courteous. He was respectful by others, and he took care of his sister seriously. Her prejudice to Darcy discovered.

At that time, Elizabeth received a letter from her home, which was saying that her younger sister Lydia ran away with Wickham, who was heavily in debt. Elizabeth was very embarrassed and she thought Darcy would look down on her. To her surprise, after Darcy knew that, he paid Wickham’s debt and then gave him a large number of money and let he got married with Lydia. From then on, Elizabeth changed the prejudice into the love for Darcy.

Elizabeth and Darcy became reconciled and got along with joy then. But Darcy’s aunt, Mrs. Catherine hurried to reach, who wanted her daughter to marry him. She made Elizabeth to guarantee not to marry him. But Elizabeth

rejected her without hesitation. Then Darcy realized that Elizabeth had already changed the opinion of him. So he made an offer of marriage sincerely again. Till now, two young people who had pride and prejudice with each other became a good couple eventually.

In general, it is a romantic story. It is full of wealth and love. Between Darcy and Elizabeth, the main bacteria are pride and prejudice that stop them to love each other at first. But in the real society, it is the main bacteria between the people when they communicate with others. What’s worse, it is also the main hurdle that people treatthemselves and matters.

Between person and person, there is always some small friction. Often, the friction is in their hidden trouble, weakness, or to others.In order to lead a more happier life, we must first learn their faults. The second is to understand other people's heart. Finally understand each other deeply, you will find society is so beautiful, light, further inspired deep inside you touched, exerting their own expertise to go and work for the society, the country and the world service.

In my opinion, the book 《Pride and Prejudice》 is worth reading. When you read it, you may have your own thoughts of this book.
