Wolfflin is by far the most widely read.There have been repeated
attempts by art historians to belittle or dissociate themselves from
Wolfflin's general position while following the procedures of his
detailed critical analyses.No great discernment has been needed to
recognise that Wolfflin's formalism is seriously limited,that there
is something strainecl about the way he yokes architecture and
painting,and that his cyclic view ofart history,according to which
a classic style is followed by a baroque elaboration and then the
whole thing starts again,is illuminating but,as it stands,
untenable.But Wolfflin's critics have not made clear the
borderline between the critical strengths and the theoretical
weaknesses.1 And this is of some current interest.For many of us,
whatever our reservations,it would be hard to find a replacement
for The Principles of Art History as a model for the analysis of
painting.
