progressively worse.This cough got worse due to smoking cigarettes.(1 pack
per day for 40 years),and he stopped smoking one month ago.The cough then
seemed to have impoved,but 3 weeks ago he noted blood-tinged sputum.Two weeks
ago he developed a sharp stabbing pain in the left chest,at first somewhat but
late actually pleuritic for a 48-hour period.Since that time the pain has
gradually subsided except for sharp twinges associated with movement of chest
wall or coughing.During this 2 week interval,he has had a low-grade fever,
some anorexia,slight weight loss,but no chills.No dyspnea.Admission chest
x-ray was said to show a oval-shaped density with suspicious cavity in the left
mid-lung field.
PH:General health good.Had lobar
pneumonia in 1959,and virus pneumonia in 1964,each time with hemoptysis.A
Chest x-ray made a few months after the virus pneumonia was said to be
negative.He had recurrent episodes of indigestion with epigastric pain
relieved by Pain Killer for a period of time,but denied other gastrointestinal
complaints.Had renal colic and passed several stones 30 years ago with no
recurrence.FH:Mother died of
lung cancer,a sister of tuberculosis.Others negative.Wife and 4 siblings
living and well.
