besides = 而且
except for = 除…之外
不能用except是因为except 的后面一定是个句子
例如 ： I received nothing except what was due to me.
what was due to me是个句子
用except for是因为 except for 的后面一定是个noun phrase (名词短语)
例如 ：The suitcase was light to carry, being empty except for two shirts.
two shirts 就是 (名词短语)

except for 是英文里的惯用法， 表达：“除了什么以外(不包括在内)”，而besides表达是：“除此以外(包括在内)。 就例句而言， ”你的作文写得很好， 除了有些拼写错误“, 后面的“拼写错误” 不在“写得很好”的范围内。
