The old man and the sea

The old man and the sea are the story of an epic struggle between the old man, seasoned fisherman and the greatest catch of his life. For 84 days, the old Cuban fisherman has set out to the sea and returns with empty hand. He is unluck y that his devoted assistant and friend, Manolin, was forced to leave the old man in order to fish in another boat. In spite of that, the boy continues to care for the old man when the old man returns each night. He helps the old man carry the fishing gear to the ramshackle hut, secures food for him and talks the latest news of American baseball, especially the trial of the old man’s hero, Joe DiMaggio.

On the eight-five day of his unlucky streak. According to his plan, Santiago sails his skiff far beyond the island’s shallow coastal waters and ventures into the Gulf Stream. He prepares his fishing lines and drops them into the sea. At noon, a big fish bites it, which he knows is a Marlin. The old skill fully hooks the fish but he can’t pull it. Instead, the skiff is pulled by the fish. The old man knows he can’t lie the line fast to the boat because the fish will frighten the line. Therefore, he tries to support the strain of the line which his shoulder, back and hands are ready to give slack when the Marlin makes a run. However, the fish pulls the boat all through the day through the night， through another day and through another night. At last, with tiredness, the fish can only swim towards east with current. In the whole process of fighting against the big fish, Santiago endures constant pain from the fishing line. Whenever the fish lunges, leaps or makes a dash for freedom, the cords cuts him badly. Although wounded and weary, the old man feels a deep empathy and admiration for the Marlin, which is as his brother in suffering but strength and resolve.

On the third day, Marlin is exhausted and Santiago is tired, ached and nearly is in a confused state of mind but he still manages to pull the Marlin in close to kill it with a harpoon thrust. The dead fish beside the skiff, the Marlin is the largest that the old man has never seen. The old man lashes the fish and a skill firmly, raises the small mast and sails for home. He is excited about substantial in awe when he brings the Marlin to the market while he is more concerned that the people who will buy the fish are the unworthy of its greatness.

As Santiago sails on with the fish, the Marlin’s blood leaves a trail in the water and attracts sharks. The first attack is a huge mako shark, which Santiago manages to kill it with harpoon. In the struggle, the old man looses harpoon and several valuable ropes which means when he copes with other shark he can only in a dilemma. To fight off the attack, the old man try best as he can, lashing a knife to an oar to kill the sharks and even clubbing them with the boat’s tiller. Although the ole man kills several sharks, more and more sharks appear. By the time of nightfall, he continues to fight against the scavengers, which have lost its sense because they devour the Marlin’s previous meat, leaving only skeleton, head and tail. Santiago regrets that he is far away the bank, and he has lost that monstrous and worthy fish and had struggled such long time with the Marlin.

The next morning, a crowd of fishermen gathers around the skeletal carcass of the fish which is still lashed to the skiff, feeling astonished. Tourists living at a nearby

café know nothing about the ole man’s hard and struggle experience. They observe the remains of the giant Marlin and mistake it for a shark. After knowing what happen, Manolin, who has been worried about the old man, is moved to tears when he finds Santiago sleeping in his bed, the boy brings the old man a coffee and the daily newspaper with the baseball scores and watches his sleep when the old man wakes up. They decide to fish together once more. Then, the old man returns to sleep and dreams his usual dream of lions playing on the beach of Africa.

The old man of novella’s title, Santiago is a fisherman, who has gone to sea for 84 day but caught nothing in return. Despite of his bad luck, he believes that if he continues to catch a fish, he can succeed. From Santiago, we should learn self-confidence even though to the extreme bad luck. In the 85 day, Santiago decides to sail his skiff far away the sea. Under the bad environment, Santiago struggles with Marlin for 3 days. Through his life, Santiago has been precedent with contests to last his strength and endurance. The Marlin with which he struggles for three days represents his greatest challenge.

In the novel, we can know a boy, whose age is between 13 and 17. Manolin is Santiago’s apprentice and devoted attendant. The old man first takes him out on a boat when he was merely five years old. However, due to Santiago’s bad luck, Monalin’s parents force him to go out on another boat. Regardless of his parents force, Manolin still cares deeply for the old man, supporting the old man with food talking about the baseball with the old man and recruiting help from villages for the old man.

From the novel, Santiago suffers terribly. At first, he has gone eight-four days without catching a fish and has become the laughingstock of his small villagers. He also endures a long struggle with Marlin though he is exhausted and starved. Yet, destruction enables the old man to undergo a remarkable transformation and he wrests triumph and renews life from his seeming defeat. However, Santiago is an old man whose physical existence is most over but the reader is assured that the spirit of Santiago will continue forever. Besides, Santiago lives according to his own observation “Man is not made for defeat. A man can be destroyed but not defeated.” As we all know, death is inevitable but the best men will nonetheless refuse to give into its power. Through the image of Santiago, the author enthusiastically praises the human, when facing hardships, shines the attractable spiritual power. In the novel, Hemingway portraits Santiago as a strong, generous, kind caring person even though he fails in the life of the duel, in the face of irreversible fate, he is still the person who owns strong spirit.

Ernest Hemingway (July 21, 1899 – July 2, 1961) was an American novelist, short-story writer, and journalist. He was part of the 1920s expatriate[eks'p?trieit] community in Paris, as well as the veterans of World War One later known as "the Lost Generation"《迷惘的一代》, as described in his posthumous

【Writing Background】

The Old Man and the Sea is based on a true story. After World War II, Hemingway moved to Cuba, and met an old fisherman who named Gregorio Fuentes（格雷戈里奥·富恩特斯）. In 1930, Hemingway was in danger because of the storm and Fuentes rescued him. Since then, they strike up a profound（深厚的） friendship, and often took a skiff far onto the sea together.

In 1936, Fuentes went far onto the sea and catches a big fish, but the fish was too large, so he was hard to tow it from the sea. When he went back, the fish was attacked by sharks and then just left only a skeleton. In the blue sea《在蓝色的海洋上》which published in Classic magazine《老爷》杂志 by Hemingway had reported this experience. At that time it gave a deep touch to Hemingway, and he realized that it was a good novel material, but he had no chance to write it.

Shortly after Christmas in 1950, Hemingway had a strong creative desire. Then in the villa of the Viewing Club“观景社” in Havana, Cuba, he began to write The Old Man and the Sea (originally called the existing sea《现有的海》). By the end of February 23, 1951, he just spent eight weeks in completing the first draft. In April, Hemingway sent the manuscript：

['m?njuskript]（原稿） to his friends to read who came to Cuba to visit him, and Hemingway won unanimous[ju'n?nim?s] （一致的）praise. Hemingway also thought that this was the best work which he could write of his whole life.

【Plot summary】

The Old Man and the Sea tells an epic ['epik] （壮丽的）battle between an old, experienced fisherman and a giant marlin. It opens by explaining that the fisherman, who is named

Santiago, has gone 84 days without catching any fish at all. He is so unlucky that his young apprentice(学徒), Manolin, has been forbidden by his parents to sail with the old man and been ordered to fish with more successful fishermen. However, the boy visits Santiago's shack each night, getting him food and discussing American baseball and his favorite player Joe DiMaggio. Santiago tells Manolin that on the next day, he will venture far out into the Gulf to fish, confident that his unlucky streak is near its end.

Thus on the eighty-fifth day, Santiago sets out alone, taking his skiff far onto the Gulf. He sets his lines into the sea, then by noon of the first day, a big fish that he is sure is a marlin takes his bait（饵）.Then on the third day of the
